Chickerell village is very near Weymouth, about 3 miles to the west. It is a lovely area with sea on three sides, the English Channel and Weymouth Bay, and is therefore handy for a visit to the world heritage Jurassic Coast. This gives the area a moderate climate albeit with occasional buffeting from westerly gales.
The area is rich in naval and smuggling history and is popular for holidays and touring, especially for campers and caravanners. There are several sites around the village.
During the past twenty years over 400 new houses have been built in Chickerell so that the population is now over 4500 with more buildings planned for the near future. A new school was also built to accommodate the influx of children, and the decision was taken by the trustees to modernise the chapel (see the History page), to make it light and comfortable. There is a good community spirit and every July a day-long event is held by the Spirit of Chickerell in the Willowbed Hall and field.
Chickerell is very near the village of Fleet, well known as the background of the novel 'Moonfleet' by J.Meade-Faulkner and a film was made of this a few years ago. The A354 road leads into Weymouth and the B3152 will take you via the coast road to Chickerell and on down to the West Country
